Graspable handrails must be 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosing with a cross sectional dimension of 1¼ to 2 inches. Handrail ends are to be returned to the wall or end in newel posts or safety terminals.
Laws which stipulate railing code requirements include the need for handrails up stairs and along ramps and other walking conditions which have a rise of more than six inches. Building codes are set forth in the manual published by the ADAAG in 2004 entitled as a guide to the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility.
